Project Explorer

Project Explorer is a tool to help you organize your Origin data. It is particularly useful if you are working with a project that contains numerous child windows. Use Project Explorer to develop a folder structure to organize the child windows in your project.

Auto Hide the Project Explorer Window

When you first start Origin, Project Explorer is docked to the edge of the workspace as an auto-hide window, and you can click on it or hover over it to open Project Explorer. (If you open an auto-hide window by clicking, you must click outside the window to close it. If you open an auto-hide window by hovering over the button, the window closes when the mouse leaves the window area if you have not clicked within the window.)

To prevent Project Explorer from auto hiding:

  1. Click on the Auto Hide button Image:Project_Explorer-2.png in the upper-right hand corner of the window.

or

  1. Click on the Window Position button in the upper-right hand corner of the window or right-cilck on the Project Explorer title bar, and click Auto Hide to deselect. Project Explorer will be docked in the workspace.

Display of Project Explorer

Because Project Explorer uses some of your workspace, you may want to close Project Explorer, even if you have already created a folder structure.

To close Project Explorer:

1. Click the Project Explorer button Image:Button_Project_Explorer.png on the Standard toolbar.

or

1. Press ALT + 1. (ALT + 1 can be used any time to toggle the visibilty of Project Explorer.)

When Project Explorer is closed, Origin continues to use your folder structure and view settings to control the display of windows in your workspace. You can also use the Window : Folders menu to navigate in your project.

For more information, see Using Project Explorer to Manage Your Windows.

Docking or floating the Project Explorer window

Like other elements of the Origin workspace -- the toolbars, the Command Window, the Results Log, the Data Display, etc. -- the Project Explorer window can be made to float or dock to any other edge in the workspace.

To make Project Explorer float:

To dock Project Explorer:

When you drag the window, you will see four pairs of edge docking tips. Each edge (left, right, top, bottom) has an outboard and an inboard tip (all inboard tips are located in the center of the display). Depending on what other tools are docked at an edge, inboard and outboard docking may behave differently and a preview appears to show the result of dropping on a tip point.

When you drag a floating window over a docked window, a new inboard tip appears with a center tip for tab grouping of windows.

To remove the tips and prevent Project Explorer from docking when positioning it as a window, press the CTRL key.

Information for Child Windows in the Project Explorer Window

You can view the names, types and sizes of the child windows in the Project Explorer. Also, you can sort the child windows based on any information field by clicking on the heading.

Note: The size of individual windows displayed in the Project Explorer is only approximate and will not correspond exactly to the size on disk upon saving. This is in part due to the fact that there usually exists some memory that cannot be ascribed to only one window.
